What I am not talking about
September 11, 2011 2 Comments
After having presented, in the previous article, what I am going to talk about, I will now talk about what I am not going to talk about. ”makes sense!” you may exclaim. anyway, dear reader, this section will allow you to understand some key definitions, or if you wonder why I do not go deeper into some issues, you will got your answer here.
Definitions
René Char – a famous French poet – used to say “giving the wrong names to things is adding more troubles to this world”. In line with the meaning of his statement and in order to make the reader understand what we mean by each given concept, I will give a concise definition of them:
Environment: is an addition of different institutions such as political, economical, religious and cultural institutions (Jansson, 2002).
Capitalism: is an economic system structured upon the accumulation of capital in which the means of production are privately owned and operated for profit, usually in competitive markets (Bentick, 1980).
The Islamic Business System (IBS): is an economic system based on chari’ah – the Islamic law – which aims to structure the Market and the different transactions that take place in it.
The Islamic Business Enterprise (IBE): is an organization which aims to make profits following the IBS.
Sustainable enterprise / viability of an enterprise: is its capacity to keep making profits and to grow (Bentick, 1980).
Delimitations
The delimitations are made to show the elements which will not be included in the investigation. This will help understand the framework of the study:
- Only contracts that are directly linked to IBE will be studied (for example: rules of selling, the company in Islam, and other contracts that will be developped later)
- I will not study the four schools of jurisprudence in Islam but only one of them (Ach-chafi’i) which is the most followed in the Islamic world.
- I will not focus the investigation on Islamic Finance as my research concerns IB which includes larger definitions than for Islamic Finance

BaarakAllaahu feekum. I look forward to more of your articles.
Just one thing: Our shaykhs taught us that the Hanafiyy school has the largest following.
May Allaah reward you with the best. Aameen.
Ameen wa feekum.
Thank you for this information. In fact the Hanafiy school has a large range of followers specially in Asia and the Chafi’i school has followers all over the world. Both are important in the islamic world nowadays, for sure.
Ameen Bourikti.
